Iron label math, and how to manage the common side effects
Part 1: The Label Math
Iron supplements are made from iron salts, and only part of the salt's weight is actual iron. The part that counts is called elemental iron.
| Iron salt | Elemental iron by weight (approx.) | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Ferrous sulfate | About 20% | 325 mg ferrous sulfate = about 65 mg elemental iron |
| Ferrous fumarate | About 33% | 200 mg ≈ 66 mg elemental iron |
| Ferrous gluconate | About 12% | 300 mg ≈ 36 mg elemental iron |
| Iron bisglycinate (chelate) | About 20% | Varies by product |
This product: [confirm on the label: "Iron (as ferrous sulfate) 65 mg" or similar, the weight of the salt, and the serving size]
Why it matters: the Supplement Facts panel shows the elemental iron, and that is the number you compare with requirements and limits.
Understanding the 65 mg Strength
| Group | Daily iron requirement (US guidance) |
|---|---|
| Adult men | 8 mg |
| Women 19 to 50 | 18 mg |
| Women 51+ | 8 mg |
| Pregnancy | 27 mg |
| Breastfeeding (19+) | 9 mg |
| Tolerable upper limit (adults) | 45 mg |
This tablet provides 65 mg of elemental iron, which is above the adult upper limit of 45 mg per day. It is a high-strength product, intended for use as directed by a doctor, usually after blood tests show low iron, and typically for a limited period followed by retesting.
If you only want a daily maintenance amount, look at our lower-strength option, [Bluebonnet Chelated Iron 18 mg]. For another higher-strength option, see [Solaray Iron 50 mg]. [Add links.]
Men and post-menopausal women usually do not need iron supplements unless a doctor advises it, since extra iron can build up in the body.
Find Out First: Do You Need Iron?
Tiredness has many causes. Ask your doctor about a CBC (complete blood count), ferritin, and, if advised, serum iron and transferrin saturation.
A Pakistan-specific note: beta-thalassaemia trait (carrier status) is common in Pakistan and can look like iron deficiency on a basic blood count, because both produce small red blood cells. If you have thalassaemia trait, extra iron may not help and could be harmful. Testing matters before taking high-dose iron.
Part 2: Side-Effect Management Guide
Conventional iron salts, such as ferrous sulfate, are effective but can upset the stomach.
| Common effect | What may help |
|---|---|
| Constipation | Drink plenty of water, eat fibre (fruit, vegetables, daal, whole-wheat atta), stay active, and ask your doctor about a gentler schedule |
| Nausea or stomach pain | Take the tablet with a small meal, even though absorption is slightly lower |
| Loose motions | Take it with food, and ask your doctor about a lower amount |
| Dark or black stools | Common and harmless. See a doctor if you also have severe stomach pain, or tarry, foul-smelling stools |
| Metallic taste | Often settles. Rinse your mouth and drink water |
| Heartburn | Take with food, sit upright after taking, and swallow with a full glass of water |
Some doctors recommend taking iron every other day instead of daily, which may improve absorption and reduce side effects for some people. Ask your doctor which schedule suits you.

Child Safety: Very Important
Keep iron tablets out of reach of children. Iron overdose is one of the most serious causes of poisoning in young children. A tablet that looks like a sweet to a child can be dangerous.
- Store the bottle high up, closed and out of sight.
- Do not call iron tablets "sweets" or "vitamins" in front of children.
- If a child swallows iron tablets, seek emergency medical help immediately, even if the child looks well. Do not wait for symptoms.
