Reading the Two Units
| Unit | Used for | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Activity units | Enzymes | A measure of how active the enzyme is. It is not milligrams |
| CFU (colony-forming units) | Probiotics | A count of live cells. Check whether it is guaranteed through expiry or only at manufacture |
Strain matters: probiotic effects are strain-specific, so look for the full strain names on the label, and not just the species.
What We Know and Don't Know
| Statement | Status |
|---|---|
| Enzymes break down proteins, carbohydrates, fats and fibre | Well established |
| Probiotics are live microorganisms | Well established |
| Research supports certain strains for certain purposes, and results vary | Accurate |
| This product treats a digestive condition, cures bloating, or restores gut balance | We do not claim this |
How to Take It
- Take [serving as directed on the label] with a meal, unless the label says otherwise.
- Take it with water. If it is a chewable, chew it thoroughly, and rinse your mouth afterwards.
- Be consistent. Probiotics are usually taken daily over weeks.
- If you take antibiotics, leave about 2 hours between the antibiotic and the probiotic, and ask your pharmacist about timing.
- Do not exceed the label amount.
Storing It in Pakistan
| Rule | Why |
|---|---|
| Check the label for refrigeration | Some products are shelf-stable, and some are not. [Confirm for this product.] |
| Cool, dry cupboard | Heat and moisture damage enzymes and cultures |
| Never in a car or a hot delivery bag | Summer heat can ruin a product in hours |
| Cap tightly closed, desiccant packet inside | Keeps moisture out |
| Use before the expiry date | Live counts fall over time |
Foods That Support Digestion
| Food | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Plain dahi and lassi | Natural live cultures |
| Daal, chickpeas, oats, vegetables, fruit and whole-wheat atta | Fibre that feeds friendly bacteria |
| Papaya and pineapple | Contain natural protein-digesting enzymes |
| Slow eating and smaller portions | Digestion starts in the mouth, and a lighter load helps |
| A short walk after meals | Gentle movement supports digestion |
When to See a Doctor
Please see a doctor if you notice:
- Persistent diarrhoea, blood in the stool, or black stools
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent upper abdominal pain
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
- Frequent vomiting, or symptoms that wake you at night
These have many possible causes, including infections, coeliac disease, gallbladder problems and pancreatic conditions, and a supplement will not fix them. A digestive enzyme also does not make gluten safe for coeliac disease, and does not protect against a food allergy.
What to Expect
Some people notice mild gas, bloating or a change in stools during the first few days, which often settles. Rarely, an allergic reaction occurs. Stop and see a doctor if symptoms are severe or last.
Who Should Speak to a Doctor First
- People with a weakened immune system, or who are seriously ill
- People with a central venous catheter, or recent major surgery
- People with pancreatitis, gallbladder disease, ulcers or other stomach conditions
- People with allergies to papaya, pineapple, moulds or fungi
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Infants and young children
- Anyone taking regular prescription medicines
