The desi feast guide: rich meals, fat digestion, and where lipase fits
What Is Lipase?
Lipase is an enzyme your body makes, mainly in the pancreas, to break down dietary fat into smaller pieces that can be absorbed. It works together with bile from the liver and gallbladder.
A lipase supplement, such as this one, provides additional lipase enzyme, which supports the digestion of fats in food.
The Pakistani Feast and Its Fat
Our food is full of flavour, and often full of ghee, oil and cream. Approximate fat in some familiar dishes, to show the scale (these are rough estimates, and they vary widely by recipe and portion):
| Dish | Why it is rich |
|---|---|
| Paratha with ghee or butter | Cooked and brushed with fat |
| Halwa puri, chana and puri | Deep-fried bread |
| Nihari, paya, haleem | Slow-cooked with oil, bone marrow and ghee |
| Karahi, korma, butter chicken | Oil, ghee or cream-based gravies |
| Biryani and pulao | Oil or ghee in the rice and meat |
| Samosa, pakora, kachori | Deep-fried |
| Kheer, rabri, halwa, jalebi | Ghee, cream or fried sweets |
None of these foods is "bad". But a very rich meal puts more fat through the digestive system at once, and some people feel heavy, bloated or uncomfortable afterwards.
Habits That Matter More Than Any Capsule
| Habit | Why it helps |
|---|---|
| Smaller portions of the richest dish | Less fat arrives at once |
| Eating slowly and chewing well | The first step of digestion starts in the mouth |
| Adding salad, vegetables or daal | Fibre and variety slow down a meal |
| A short walk after eating | Gentle movement supports digestion |
| Not lying down straight after a big meal | Helps avoid discomfort |
| Spacing rich meals out | Gives your digestion a break |
| Staying hydrated | Supports normal digestion |
A supplement is an add-on to these habits, and not a replacement for them.

About the units: enzyme strength is measured in activity units, and not in milligrams. Compare activity units, not weight, if you compare products.

How to Take It
- Take [serving as directed on the label] with the first bites of your meal, or just before, so that the enzyme is present with the food.
- Take it with a meal that contains fat. It is not meant for use between meals.
- Do not exceed the label amount.
- If you eat a very rich meal, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether more than one capsule is suitable.
Do Not Ignore Persistent Symptoms
Digestive discomfort after rich food is common. But please see a doctor if you notice:
- Greasy, pale, floating or foul-smelling stools that keep happening
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent upper abdominal pain, especially pain that spreads to the back
- Yellowing of the skin or eyes
- Frequent vomiting or nausea
- Pain after fatty meals that keeps returning, which can be a sign of a gallbladder problem
These can be signs of conditions of the pancreas, gallbladder or small intestine, and they need a proper medical assessment.
What to Expect
Digestive enzymes are generally well tolerated. Some people notice mild stomach upset, loose motions, gas or nausea. Rarely, an allergic reaction occurs. Stop and consult a doctor if you feel unwell.
Who Should Speak to a Doctor First
- People with pancreatitis, pancreatic disease, gallbladder disease, ulcers or other stomach conditions
- People already taking prescribed pancreatic enzymes
- People taking orlistat or other fat-blocking medicines, since the two work against each other
- People with allergies to moulds or fungi, or to pork if the enzyme is of animal origin
- People with diabetes
- Pregnant or breastfeeding women
- Anyone buying for a child
