Equate Probiotic Capsules in Pakistan

The anatomy of a probiotic label: how to read strain names, CFU and storage

The Probiotic Label in Four Lines

A good probiotic label tells you four things. Learn them once, and you can judge any probiotic.

LineWhat it isExample (illustrative)
1. GenusThe broad familyLactobacillus
2. SpeciesThe type within the familyrhamnosus
3. StrainThe specific version, usually letters and numbersGG
4. CFUThe number of live cells per serving10 billion CFU

Put together: Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG, 10 billion CFU.

Why the strain matters most: probiotic effects are strain-specific. Two products with the same species can behave differently if the strain differs. A label that lists only the genus and species, with no strain, tells you less.

This product's label: [copy the genus, species, strain and CFU for each culture from your label]

CFU: What the Number Means

CFU stands for colony-forming units, a count of live microorganisms that can multiply. Check two things:

  • Is the count "at time of manufacture" or "through expiry"? A count guaranteed through expiry is more meaningful, since live cultures decline over time.
  • Bigger is not automatically better. The amount that matters depends on the strain and the purpose.

A Short Glossary: The Three "Biotics"

TermMeaningExamples
ProbioticsLive microorganismsDahi cultures, probiotic capsules
PrebioticsFood for the friendly bacteria, mostly fibreDaal, chickpeas, oats, bananas, onions, garlic, whole-wheat atta
PostbioticsCompounds made by microbes when they ferment fibreShort-chain fatty acids (a topic in research)

A prebiotic fibre is sometimes added to probiotic supplements. [Check your label: does this product include a prebiotic such as inulin?]

Feeding Your Bacteria: A Fibre-Friendly Day

A probiotic works best alongside a diet that feeds the gut microbes.

MealFibre-friendly choices
BreakfastOats or whole-wheat paratha, with dahi, and a banana
LunchDaal or chana, a salad with onion and cucumber, and a roti
SnackFruit or a handful of nuts
DinnerVegetables, lentils or beans, with dahi on the side

Drink enough water as fibre intake rises.

Storage: Check Before You Buy

Live cultures are sensitive to heat and moisture, which matters in Pakistan's summers.

  • Read the label. Some probiotics are shelf-stable and some need refrigeration. [Confirm for this product.]
  • Keep the bottle in a cool, dry place, away from the stove and sunny windows.
  • Never leave it in a car or a hot delivery bag.
  • Keep the cap tightly closed and the desiccant packet inside.
  • Use before the expiry date.

How to Take It

  1. Take [serving as directed on the label].
  2. Take it with or just before a meal, unless your label says otherwise.
  3. Be consistent. Probiotics are usually taken daily over weeks.
  4. If you take antibiotics, leave about 2 hours between the antibiotic and your probiotic, and ask your pharmacist about timing.

What to Expect

Some people notice mild gas, bloating or a change in stools during the first few days, which often settles. Stop and see a doctor if symptoms are severe or last.

Who Should Speak to a Doctor First

  • People with a weakened immune system, or who are seriously ill
  • People with a central venous catheter, or recent major surgery
  • Pregnant or breastfeeding women
  • Infants and young children
  • Anyone taking regular prescription medicines
