Spring Valley Calcium 600 mg + D3 in Pakistan

The calcium traffic controller: what calcium works well with, and what it blocks

Why Calcium and D3 Together?

Calcium is the main mineral in your bones and teeth, and about 99 percent of the calcium in your body is stored there. It is also needed for muscles and for blood clotting.

Vitamin D3 is paired with calcium because vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium from food and supplements.

Calcium contributes to:

  • The maintenance of normal bones and teeth
  • Normal muscle function
  • Normal blood clotting
  • Normal energy-yielding metabolism

Vitamin D contributes to:

  • Normal absorption and use of calcium and phosphorus
  • Maintenance of normal bones and teeth
  • Normal muscle function

How Much Calcium Do You Need?

GroupDaily requirement (US guidance)Upper limit
Adults 19 to 501,000 mg2,500 mg
Women 51 and over1,200 mg2,000 mg
Men 51 to 701,000 mg2,000 mg
Adults 71 and over1,200 mg2,000 mg
Pregnancy and breastfeeding1,000 mg (adults)2,500 mg

This tablet provides 600 mg of calcium [confirm: serving size and whether this is elemental calcium], so it is meant to top up your food, not replace it.

Calcium in Your Food: The Desi Calculator

Approximate amounts per serving:

FoodServingApprox. calcium
Milk1 cupAbout 300 mg
Dahi (yogurt)1 cupAbout 300 mg
Sardines with soft bonesAbout 85 gAbout 325 mg
Sesame seeds (til)1 tablespoonAbout 90 mg
AlmondsA small handfulAbout 75 mg
Chickpeas (chana), cookedHalf a cupAbout 40 mg
Spinach (palak), cooked1 cupAbout 245 mg, but poorly absorbed

A note on spinach: palak contains oxalates, which bind calcium and make most of it unavailable to your body. Leafy greens like spinach are good for other reasons, but they are not a reliable calcium source.

Add up your day: a diet with one or two cups of milk or dahi can already provide about half your daily calcium. If you rarely eat dairy, your food total may be much lower, and a supplement may help close the gap. Count all sources so that your total stays below the upper limit.

How to Take It

  1. Take [serving as directed on the label].
  2. If it is calcium carbonate, take it with a meal.
  3. The body absorbs calcium best in amounts of about 500 mg or less at a time, so if you take more than that in a day, split it across meals, as your label or doctor advises.
  4. Drink water through the day.
  5. Count calcium from dairy, multivitamins and antacids, since many contain calcium.

Possible Side Effects

Some people notice gas, bloating or constipation, especially with calcium carbonate. Drinking water, eating fibre-rich foods and splitting the dose can help.

Most of the calcium in spinach is not absorbed because of oxalates.
