Asgandh in a capsule: what it is, and an eight-question safety self-check
What Is Ashwagandha?
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) is a small shrub whose root has been used for many centuries in South Asian herbal traditions, including Unani and Ayurvedic practice, where it is commonly known as asgandh. It is often called "Indian ginseng" or "winter cherry".
It is traditionally used as a herbal tonic. In supplements, the root is usually dried and ground, or concentrated into an extract.
An honest note: research on ashwagandha exists but varies in quality, and results are mixed. There are no approved health claims for the herb, and we do not claim that it treats or prevents stress, anxiety, sleep problems or any other condition.
Decoding the Label: Root Powder vs Extract
| Type | What it is | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Root powder | Ground dried root | Weight of root powder per serving |
| Standardized extract | Concentrated root extract made to contain a set percentage of active plant compounds called withanolides | Extract weight and the % withanolides |
The math: withanolides (mg) = extract amount (mg) × standardization percentage.
| Example | Extract | Standardized to | Withanolides |
|---|---|---|---|
| Example A | 600 mg | 5% | 30 mg |
| Example B | 300 mg | 10% | 30 mg |

The Eight-Question Safety Self-Check
Herbal does not automatically mean safe for everyone. Answer these honestly. If you answer yes to any one, please talk to your doctor or pharmacist before using ashwagandha.
| # | Question | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Are you pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding? | Ashwagandha is generally avoided in pregnancy, and there is not enough safety information for breastfeeding |
| 2 | Do you have a thyroid condition or take thyroid medicine? | It may increase thyroid hormone levels and can interact with thyroid medicines |
| 3 | Do you take diabetes or blood pressure medicines? | It may lower blood sugar and blood pressure |
| 4 | Do you take sedatives, sleep medicines, or anti-anxiety medicines? | It may add to their drowsy effects |
| 5 | Do you have an autoimmune condition or take immune-suppressing medicines? | It may stimulate the immune system |
| 6 | Do you have a liver condition, or have you had liver problems? | Rare cases of liver injury have been reported with ashwagandha supplements |
| 7 | Do you have iron overload (haemochromatosis) or a hormone-sensitive condition? | Possible effects on iron and hormones |
| 8 | Do you have surgery planned in the next two weeks? | It is generally advised to stop herbal supplements ahead of surgery, since it may add to sedation |
Anyone buying for a child should speak to a paediatrician first.
Stop and see a doctor straight away if you notice yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, severe stomach pain, persistent nausea, or unusual tiredness.
Mental Health: A Supplement Is Not a Treatment
Ashwagandha is often sold for stress and mood. If you feel persistently anxious, low, overwhelmed or unable to cope, please talk to a doctor or a qualified mental health professional. Seeking support is a sign of strength, and no herbal supplement replaces professional care. Do not stop a prescribed medicine on your own.
